Did you know that over 65% of Norwegian women over the age of 30 attempt to lose weight more than four times every single year? Well done, ladies – that's clearly an "A" for effort! Or at least, that's one way to look at it. Another way is, well, what exactly went wrong the first time after your 30th birthday, and why do we find ourselves here again for the 68th time when you're 48 years old, still bravely battling the bathroom scales? It's a bit like old movie Groundhog Day, but with less Bill Murray and more... well, more you staring at a fridge full of half-eaten good intentions.

As a professional in the health and fitness industry, I often get asked if I worry about all the new gyms popping up everywhere. My answer is always the same: we not in competition with other
fitness centres. We are in competition with the sofa, the TV, and these days, definitely with TikTok!" Because let's be honest, it's far easier to scroll through endless videos of questionable dance routines (or even more questionable diet advice) than it is to lace up your trainers and drop by us for an hour. This constant cycle of trying, failing, and trying again must be incredibly disheartening. We get it. It's frustrating, it's exhausting, and it often feels like you're stuck in a loop. But please, don't give up hope just yet. Keep reading, because we’re about to unravel some truths that might just change your approach for good.

The Weight Yo-Yo: Time to Break the Cycle!

At some point, we simply have to look in the mirror and ask ourselves: "Why am I attempting another miracle TikTok diet for the ninth time?" It’s a classic trap, isn't it? We're all searching for that magic quick fix that promises effortless results. And every time, the genetically gifted, chemically enhanced 23-year-old with the adorable dimples, perfectly wrapping up the "latest wonder weight loss answer" in shiny new packaging, tricks us again. They make it look so easy, so attainable.

Why do we want to believe these things so desperately? Because when we feel vulnerable – when our confidence is low, when we're tired of feeling uncomfortable in our own skin – these
promises offer a glimmer of hope. They tap into our desire for an easy solution, something that will make all the struggle disappear without too much effort on our part. It's human nature to seek
the path of least resistance, especially when facing something as daunting as weight loss.

But here’s the unvarnished truth: permanent, safe, healthy, and beneficial weight loss isn't about magic. It’s fundamentally about calorie deficit. In simple terms, you need to consistently consume fewer calories than your body uses over time. Conversely, calorie surplus – eating more calories than your body burns – is what leads to weight gain. There's no escaping this energy balance equation.

Now, let's talk about the wrong way to achieve that deficit. Imagine you're 160cm tall, currently eating 2700 calories a day, working out 3 time a week, and weighing a stuck 81kg. Technically, if you decided to eat just two Big Macs a day, you'd likely create a massive calorie deficit, causing rapid weight loss. But let's be absolutely clear: this would be an awful idea. Beyond the sheer misery, such a restrictive and nutritionally void approach would deprive your body of essential vitamins, minerals, and macronutrients. This isn't just about weight; it's about setting yourself up for almost guaranteed long-term health implications, including nutrient deficiencies, muscle loss (which slows your metabolism!), gallstones, and a rebound weight gain that often leaves you heavier than when you started.

This highlights a crucial point: no one should be constantly "on and off" diets. That "diet" mentality sets you up for failure. Instead, your eating structure needs to change. This doesn't mean you have to eat nothing but lettuce and bird food for the rest of your life! Far from it. What it does mean is taking the time to learn about food – what it contains, what your body truly needs
for energy and health, as opposed to what you think you need or what a craving is telling you. This understanding is a huge step in the right direction.

Speaking of cravings, they're often your body's way of telling you that you're missing certain nutrients or that your blood sugar is fluctuating wildly due to an unbalanced diet. When you establish a balanced, healthy food structure that provides all the essential macronutrients (proteins, carbohydrates, fats) and micronutrients (vitamins, minerals), those intense cravings often diminish significantly, in most cases disappear altogether. Your body feels satisfied and nourished, rather than constantly seeking something to fill a nutritional void.

The benefits of embracing a healthy eating structure extends far beyond the scales. Psychologically, consistent healthy eating can lead to improved mood, increased energy, better focus, and a significant boost in self-esteem and body confidence. Physically, you're looking at a reduced risk of chronic diseases (like heart disease and diabetes), improved sleep, stronger bones, better digestion, and just generally feeling more vibrant and alive.

If you're a parent, remember that you can have a huge impact on the basic health of your family just by changing what you buy at the supermarket. After all, someone is putting that stuff in your
kitchen! Making conscious choices about what fills your cupboards and fridge is one of the most powerful things you can do for everyone's well-being.

I was asked to write about the five most common mistakes people make when trying to lose weight. And while I'm sure I'll get around to listing them, I wanted to jump straight to the single
biggest thing you could do to help yourself: Take a moment to truly understand what's really going on. Stop falling for the fads and start embracing rational, evidence-based knowledge, the
type presented by people with grey hair, thick glasses, and white coats, not half-naked 22 year olds with enough Botox, and dermal fillers in a practically brand-new face to keep them shining in
the dark for life. Let us help you cultivate that new superpower of understanding! Keep an eye on our "Just Saying" tab on the Sportsenter 1 website – it's regularly updated with new helpful
information you need to help you understand the what, why, and how to reach your goals.
